Christine de Pizan's Changing Opinion: A Quest for Certainty in the Midst of Chaos

Christine de Pizan's Changing Opinion: A Quest for Certainty in the Midst of Chaos
Douglas Kelly | ISBN: 1843841118 | PDF | 242 pages | 2007 | 5 MB

Christine de Pizan's Changing Opinion examines the evolution of Christine's thought on true and false opinion. She reflected deeply on the subject of opinion while analyzing, evaluating, challenging, and changing her own and others' opinions in her lifelong quest for certain truth. Parsing opinion in Christine's writings gives us insight into her thought on controversial issues while highlighting opinions that were and, indeed, often still are, subjective and controversial. The first two chapters treat her definition and description of opinion, including her conception of the thinking mind and the arts by which that mind expresses thought; they also follow her changing opinion about the nature and power of fortune in the world she knew. The next three chapters treat three specific changes in her opinions on misogyny, chivalric (or courtly) love, and self-interest and enlightened self-interest in society. The last chapter relates Christine's views on opinion to recent work on subjectivity in medieval writing. Douglas Kelly is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

A Cold War In The Soviet Bloc: Polish-east German Relations, 1945-1962

A Cold War In The Soviet Bloc: Polish-east German Relations, 1945-1962 by Sheldon Anderson
Publisher: Westview Press | December 1, 2000 | ISBN: 0813337836 | Pages: 336 | PDF | 32,3 MB

In A Cold War in the Soviet Bloc, Sheldon Anderson uses recently declassified documents from Polish and East German communist party and foreign ministry archives to examine the interplay of national interests with the exigencies of communist party relations within the Soviet bloc during the Cold War. Anderson explores how Polish-East German relations were strained over the permanence of the Oder-Neisse border, the correct road to socialism, German repatriation from Poland, and trade policy; he provides an inside account of the heated debates that seriously divided the Polish and East German communists.Anderson delves into how and why the rift culminated in the return of the anti-Stalinist Wladyslaw Gomulka in October 1956, and he delineates how the Polish-East German conflict undermined the unity of the Soviet bloc on its most strategic flank. In doing so, he reveals the persistence of nationalism and ethnic prejudice in the former communist countries. In this timely text, Anderson pinpoints how nationalism has reemerged as a powerful political force following the end of the Cold War. With A Cold War in the Soviet Bloc, Anderson markedly fills the gap in the existing scholarship on postwar relations between the countries of East Europe.
