Dick Hyman, one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians alive, is especially known as an authority on early jazz. After a lifetime of playing and studying the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Hyman announced he’d like to record for RR a solo program of music associated with Bix, including all five original pieces Bix wrote for piano. (Most likely, these are a recorded first.) Hyman arranged other numbers Bix performed with various groups, and plays and improvises upon these in his distinctive, brilliant style. The title track is an infectious Hyman original reminiscent of the period. An attractive bonus is a piano four-hands performance with Hyman’s friend and stride authority, Mike Lipskin.

The Vintage Recording Project was set up to replicate recording techniques used in the late 1920sand 1930s. Over six CDs the project has developed into looking at repertoire. In the early days of Jazz there were rumours of collaborations which have some basis in fact, but which have passed into folklore. One such collaboration was a jam session held following a meeting of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.

Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder's records seemed to be as much history lesson as they were entertainment. Not because Cooder was trying to club you over the head with this stuff; he simply gravitated to great songs, no matter what the era or genre. Released in 1978, Jazz seems to be his first conscious attempt at a concept album, in the historical sense. Here he pays homage to some of the early tunes and masters of jazz, ranging from the late 1800s through the "coon songs" of the early part of the next century, to the ragtime and "Spanish" music of Jelly Roll Morton, and the sophistication of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. The only living artist (at the time of release) who's represented here is the great Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence, who recorded from the '50s through the '80s, and whose syncopated style was extremely influential in Cooder's own development as a guitarist.

The trumpet of Franco-Catalonian Raynald Colom tells a whole story, weaving a common theme through the original jazz swing, the rage of hip hop and the sounds of freedom so dear to great black music, with some brilliant passages soaring into chamber music and French chanson too. Between Colom s new, inspired versions and witty allusions, we hear the shades of Bix Beiderbecke, the Last Poets, the Art Ensemble and Coltrane, not forgetting Bartók and Leo Ferré… This is jazz at its most modern, jazz with its head held high, jazz of today and proud of its history, jazz whose beat tells its true nature open yet committed.

Bucky Pizzarelli salutes arranger Bill Challis, who was responsible for many of the most important charts played by the Jean Goldkette Orchestra and Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, along with helping transcribe the handful of compositions by legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke.
