One of the most versatile of all East Coast contemporary jazz guitarists, Chuck Loeb was equally inspired to play screaming fusion as he was to write hip radio-ready smooth jazz hits and sweet candlelit gems. This nice collection definitely focuses on the latter, highlighting his low-key acoustic and electric playing on songs culled from his seven Shanachie releases from 1996-2005.

Between 2 Worlds is a collection of material culled from sessions on either side of the Atlantic. The first seven tracks were cut in New York and the remaining four in Berlin. Regardless of points on a map, though, the two worlds that Loeb straddles on the album are more conceptual than geographical. Between 2 Worlds dispenses with much of the technology of his previous recordings and instead focuses on the basic trio of guitar, bass and drums.

After spending time on the road after the release of their self-titled debut Jazz Funk Soul, the superstar trio of Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb and Everette Harp booked more studio time, with the goal of capturing their dynamic onstage energy and flow on a follow-up release. The brilliant result may be called MORE SERIOUS BUSINESS, but these legends also have a blast, let loose and jam. Combine Harp’s soaring sax, Loeb’s brilliant inventive guitar and Lorber’s super funky piano, and the result is serious fun – percussive and punchy one minute, sweet and sensual the next. Combined, the three have amassed an incredible 50-plus #1 Smooth Jazz radio hits, including two from their debut as Jazz Funk Soul. There are sure to be a bunch more now that they’re getting down to MORE SERIOUS BUSINESS.

BOP is a one-of-a-kind traditional bebop album that brings together world class musicians, including Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, Harvey Mason, Brian Bromberg, Til Bronner, Everette Harp, Eric Marienthal, Brian Dunne, Randy Brecker, and John Pattitucci. The idea to create this album was conceptualized by Jeff Lorber, and Chuck Loeb, who coordinates the Berks Jazz Fest bebop jam sessions. They organized and co-produced this album together, and later recorded it at my studio. All proceeds from the recording go to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation.

Bridges is the sublime collaboration of 2 of the most renowned instrumentalists in Jazz! Between them, saxophonist Eric Marienthal and guitarist Chuck Loeb have either written, produced, or performed on more than 50 Top 10 Smooth Jazz radio singles. Both have thrilled audiences around the world for more than 20 years as solo artists and featured artists in various groups: Marienthal with the likes of Chick Corea, The Rippingtons, Keiko Matsui, and Jeff Lorber and Loeb as co-leader of Fourplay and Jazz Funk Soul. Bridges represents these Smooth Jazz icons at their best, but it is more than just a Smooth Jazz album. As the title suggests, these Soundscapes bridge the gap between the commercial world of Smooth Jazz, the tranquility of New Age music, and the more artistic explorations that are at the heart of the true Jazz experience!

Although the first two tracks, simple and lush renditions of the Babyface tunes "Water Runs Dry" and "Breathe Again," pale in comparison to thoughtful and soulful originals like "Blue Kiss" and "New Life" (which features labelmate saxman and song co-writer Kim Waters), they show that Loeb was ahead of the curve in smooth jazz; when the format went cover happy in the early \2000s, it was Kirk Whalum who did the first all-Babyface recording The Babyface Songbook. True to his adventurous musical sensibilities, Loeb doesn't totally play it safe when he's romantic. The chill tune "Stained Glass" (originally from eBop) is driven by otherworldly percussion textures and a slow burning swirl of electric guitar and Randy Becker's trumpet. By design, The Love Song Collection is not aimed to please fans of Loeb's wilder side, but it's a great reminder of his ability to compose beautiful melodies.
