Astiberri, 2016 | Spanish | CBR | 136 págs. | 67.5 MB

Instead of Leonard Bernstein, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra was fronted this time by Vladimir Golschmann. Born in Paris to Russian émigrés in 1893 and head of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1931, Golschmann was one of the few conductors with whom Gould apparently never had problems, and vice versa. In the Beethoven concerto Gould played his own cadenza – with a noticeable nod to Max Reger ….

Among the projects that Columbia had arranged with Gould were the complete recordings of Bach’s solo keyboard works and the Beethoven sonatas. Both were to remain unfinished. Long after becoming a concert drop-out, Gould now planned to become a “record drop-out”: “My contract with CBS runs a bit beyond my 50th year. After that, there is going to be a major change of gears, much as there was twenty years ago.”

By now the critics had evidently made their peace with Gould’s wayward readings of Beethoven. His recording of the C-minor Concerto, again with Leonard Bernstein, met with general approval, even if Gould “yields more to his own nature than he should in the Largo” and “meanders and rhapsodizes without thinking that this movement, too, is by Beethoven.“

Gould’s sole collaboration with Leopold Stokowski, to whom he devoted a large radio portrait for the CBC in 1971. This musical “summit meeting” between the thirty-four-year-old Canadian and a maestro nearly half a century his senior caused yet another dream to come true: Gould’s first encounter with his revered Barbra Streisand, who was recording her latest album next door …

As the title suggests, this dramatised documentary about the eccentric Canadian pianist Glenn Gould is broken up into thirty-two short films (mirroring the thirty-two part structure of Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', the recording that Gould made famous), each giving us an insight into some aspect of Gould's life and career. Out of respect for the music lead actor Colm Feore is never seen playing the piano, merely reacting to Gould's own recordings, which are extensively featured.

Bach: The Goldberg Variations is the 1955 debut album of the Canadian classical pianist Glenn Gould. An interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), the work launched Gould's career as a renowned international pianist, and became one of the most well-known piano recordings. Sales were "astonishing" for a classical album: it was reported to have sold 40,000 copies by 1960, and had sold more than 100,000 by the time of Gould's death in 1982.

His inimitable music and writing reveal and insightful world-view that we are still unravelling – his complex recording technologies, including overdubbing, was unprecedented.
