In their own ways, Zidane and Les Revenants are some of Mogwai's finest work, so it makes sense that Atomic – an album based on their music for the BBC 4 documentary Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise and their first release after the departure of John Cummings – follows suit. The band's tenth album recalls not only Zidane and Les Revenants but the fearsome sweep of Jóhann Jóhannsson's Fordlandia, another unflinching look at humankind's capacity to discover and create equally constructive and destructive technology.

Keeping busy during Air's hiatus after the release of 2012's Le Voyage dans la Lune, Jean-Benoît Dunckel collaborated with New Young Pony Club's Lou Hayter as Tomorrow's World and also worked with Bang Gang's Bardi Jóhannsson as Starwalker. The duo previewed its music in late 2013 with the single "Bad Weather," which played like a blend of Dunckel and Jóhannsson's main projects. Starwalker's debut EP was scheduled for release via Prototype Recording.

Knopf | 2014 | ISBN: 0385351836 | 288 pages | EPUB | 4 MB

B.J. Novak's One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories is an endlessly entertaining, surprisingly sensitive, and startlingly original debut that signals the arrival of a brilliant new voice in American fiction. Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, One More Thing has at its heart the most human of phenomena: love, fear, hope, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element just that might make a person complete. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, the many pieces in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humor, deep heart, sharp eye, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader.

Martin Scorsese's debut feature, Who's That Knocking at My Door? contains many of the autobiographical elements that would inform Scorsese's work as became a director of world-class importance. This was Harvey Keitel's debut as well, and he plays a young New Yorker named J.R. (the name also served as the film's alternate title) as a tortured vehicle for Scorsese's own inner conflict between rigid Catholic tradition and initial forays into liberating sexual experience. Produced over a lengthy on-and-off schedule while Scorsese was a struggling New York University film student, and shot in the Little Italy neighborhoods where Scorsese was raised, the film (with a final budget of $75,000) is a boldly stylized, stream-of-consciousness experience, establishing Scorsese's passion for well-chosen rock & roll soundtrack songs while plumbing the depths of J.R.'s soul as he begins a tenuous relationship with an independent, sexually experienced young woman (Zina Bethune) who's at odds with J.R.'s seething repression.
Incorporating fantasy sequences to further convey the young man's turbulent thoughts and emotions, Who's That Knocking at My Door earned favorable reviews, announcing the arrival of a bracing new talent and setting the stage, five years later, for the breakout triumph of Mean Streets. –Jeff Shannon

"It was while in India that Fuller first contacted Aleister Crowley, writer, magician and notorious self-publicist. He saw an advertisement offering a cash award for the best essay on Crowley's works published in the "Traveller's Edition", and "on its arrival, I decided to try my luck". Such were the origins of Fuller's first book, The Star in the West. Fuller won Crowley's prize and the two men became fast friends.
