Nancy Sinatra's sophomore effort How Does That Grab You? sticks to her usual LP formula: a hit title track, a bunch of pop covers ("Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" is the best), and some unremarkable Lee Hazlewood songs, the exception being the classy Nancy & Lee duet "Sand." There are four notable bonus tracks on the CD reissue from 45's: the fuzz-guitar-driven single "Lightning's Girl" (one of her very best songs), a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Until It's Time for You to Go," the single "The Last of the Secret Agents," and the breezy California pop duet with her father, "Feelin' Kinda Sunday."

A curious thing about the legacy of cult weirdo Lee Hazlewood is how it's been shaped by the mere availability or better still, the unavailability of his material: all of it was difficult to find for a long, long time but as it started to eke out on CD in the late '90s, it was the late '60s and early '70s recordings, even the early sides for MGM, that appeared, never the Reprise Recordings that perhaps accounted for his strongest impression in the public in the '60s. Rhino Handmade rectified this wrong in 2007 with the release Strung Out on Something New: The Reprise Recordings subsequently released in a less limited incarnation in the U.K. which rounds up all of his Reprise recordings apart from his duets with Nancy Sinatra: the acoustic 1965 LP The N.S.V.I.P.'s, 1966's Friday's Child, 1968's Love and Other Crimes, plus two non-LP singles and a host of Hazlewood productions for other Reprise acts, including Jack Nitzsche, Duane Eddy, Sanford Clark, and Dino, Desi & Billy.

Compilations that can't seem to decide whether they're greatest-hits anthologies or rarities collections don't really satisfy anybody, and that's the predicament in which this Nancy Sinatra CD finds itself. There are some hard-to-locate tracks here, like the campy, Lee Hazlewood-penned "Your Groovy Self," from the soundtrack to Elvis Presley's Speedway movie; the sub-standard Hazlewood composition "Happy," which made #74 in 1968, and eludes most Nancy Sinatra greatest-hits compilations; and the dispensable "Geronimo," which Sinatra sang in the 1965 movie The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini. There are also a couple of unreleased tracks: an inessential Sinatra-Hazlewood duet cover of "Love Is Strange," and the forced astrology satire "Zodiac Blues," produced by Mickie Most.

Frank Sinatra's daughter Nancy became very popular as a singer of a string of hits that sold millions of records between 1965 and 1968, establishing her image as a spunky, sexy member of the "now" generation. She remains best known for her 1966 signature hit "These boots are made for walking", but also for the very tender ballad "Something stupid" that he sung in duet with her father, and other hits mostly composed by, and sung with, the husky-voiced, country-and-western-inspired singer Lee Hazlewood. This great 1986 best-of album contains all her top hits in their original recordings. Enjoy a really delightful CD and a nice booklet included, with detailed descriptions of all the songs and a Nancy's bio.
