Don't Slander Me is a fortunate rarity among Roky Erickson's solo albums - it actually captures the man playing with a tight and emphatic rock & roll band, and was recorded in a quality recording studio with a competent engineer at the board, and given the amount of shoddy semi-bootleg Erickson releases that have oozed into the market over the years, this alone makes it worth a listen. Even better, Don't Slander Me is one of Erickson's strongest rock albums, with his voice sharp as a switchblade and his rhythm guitar work clicking perfectly with Duane Aslaksen's fierce leads and Billy Miller's gloriously eccentric autoharp patterns.

The Evil One : Roky Erickson was very much a changed man when he re-emerged on the music scene in the late '70s after a deeply troubling stay in a mental institution following an arrest for drugs in 1969. The graceful but energetic proto-psychedelia of Erickson's music with the 13th Floor Elevators was replaced by a hot-wired straight-ahead rock sound which suggested an updated version of the teenaged garage pounders Roky recorded with his early group the Spades, and the charming psychobabble of Tommy Hall's lyrics with the Elevators gave way to twisted narratives documenting Roky's obsessive enthusiasm for cheezoid horror movies of the 1950s.

A spotty but basically worthwhile three-disc set, Collectables' 1966-1967 Unreleased Masters Collection scours the International Artists vault for previously unreleased songs, alternate takes, rehearsals, and demos of songs that appeared on The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Easter Everywhere, and a couple of live cuts for good measure. Its excessive length, coupled with the often-iffy sound and performance quality, makes it hard going for all but the most devout Roky Erickson fanatics; it's definitely best to be sampled no more than a disc at a time, and even then, judicious use of the forward skip button helps a lot

The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas, which existed from 1965 to 1969. During their career, the band released four LPs and seven 45s for the International Artists record label. This 4x discs set contains all four of the original Elevators albums that were released on the International Artists label from 1966 to 1968, remastered and collected in a clam box with extensive new notes by band expert Paul Drummond. In addition to the stereo versions of the three 'studio' albums, which were remastered and remixed from the original tapes in 2007 by the original producer Walt Andrus, the set also includes a completely new mix of 1968's "Live" album, minimizing the fake applause that was added to the recordings and removing glitches that blighted previous versions.
