There's a wealth of information to be found inside the beautiful packaging that accompanies this release, but a brief Theodore Roosevelt quote may be the most telling piece of text to be found there. It reads: "There is nothing more practical in the end than the preservation of beauty, than the preservation of anything that appeals to the higher emotions in mankind." That really says it all about this artist and her work, for there is nobody more capable of harnessing emotions in music and projecting and preserving the beauty and power of the natural world in sound than Maria Schneider. She's demonstrated that time and again, and she does it once more on this awe-inspiring release.

The tracks on this album were recorded over a period of no less than 16 years. The earliest, the two versions of Donna Anna's 'Non mi dir', date from 1953, and were intended to test microphone placings before Callas made her first commercial recording for EMI: Lucia di Lammermoor. The latest, the Verdi arias recorded with Nicola Rescigno in 1964-1965 and 1969, were never approved for release by the soprano. When Callas Rarities was first released in 1993, Gramophone wrote: 'Each item, each phrase almost, has something to be said about it: the whole collection makes essential listening'.

Recorded in 1949 when Maria Callas was just 25, this debut recital encapsulates the young soprano's astonishing maturity, versatility and technical finesse. She had already sung all three roles showcased here - Wagner's Isolde and Bellini's Norma and Elvira (I puritani) - in the theatre. As Gramophone, which described the recital as 'incandescent and spellbinding', wrote: 'The Liebestod is a beautiful example of sustained interpretation, with a long line running through the whole piece, each phrase finding part-fulfilment in the next until the climax is reached,' concluding overall that: 'The eloquence of phrase and the technical control put at the service of a discerning heart and mind are obvious to hear'.

Composer/arranger Maria Schneider and her 18-piece orchestra perform a variety of advanced and difficult music on this CD. The centerpiece of the set is her three-part "Scenes from Childhood" which deals with fear, confusion and grudging acceptance; do not look here for any childlike melodies or playfulness. In addition the big band plays a reworked version of "Giant Steps," the "Love Theme from Spartacus," the Spanish-flavored "El Viento" (which is slightly reminiscent of Gil Evans's writing for Sketches of Spain) and "Waxwings."

The recordings that Giulini made with the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1976 document an extraordinary partnership and remain among the finest of the conductor's career. Giulini's Mahler First is more lyric than most, yet with enough energy to satisfy Mahlerians; the last movement a tribute to the conductor's unerring sense of orchestral balances even in crushing climaxes. His rendition of the orchestral movements of Berlioz's "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet excels in its poetry, the warmly caressing Chicago strings in the Love Scene irresistible. The Beethoven Seventh is an eloquent blend of the Dionysian and Apollonian approaches to this "dance symphony," with glowing horns, driving rhythms and lovely solo turns. Giulini's later remakes of the Beethoven and other works in the set often were soporific; here, he's on target.
