Compiled from the Porcupine Tree support slot in October 2006, this is a snapshot of the duo grappling with the task of combining the harmonic ambiguity of Soundscapes with some straight ahead rock grooves. With so much of Robert’s public work being taken up with ‘scaping in recent times, it’s almost a novelty to hear him rocking it up like he does on Time Groove from Boston and Queer Jazz NYC. Despite all the technology involved this is a pared-back sound compared to previous projeKcts, and there's a tentative, exploratory quality about much of the music; two players in search of that often elusive moment, an intriguing aspect which provides much of the tension and appeal.

“Great. Really good. What now?” enquires a delighted Bill Bruford at the end of a number What now indeed? The residency at the Jazz Café felt fresh and different yet paradoxically recognizable and familiar, suggesting that P1 were in many respects the missing link between 1974 and 1994. Despite Mr. Clueless of Camden interrupting Robert’s first KC-related stage announcement in over 13 years, nothing could take away from the fact that it had been an amazing week of momentous improvisations with the fourth and final evening being particularly strong. This gig represents both a completion and a new beginning as Bill takes his final bow on the KC stage.

Beginning with the surprise manifestation of Crims Past, this is P3 being musically inquisitive to the point of hyperactivity; no musical stone is left unturned as they dig deep and delve into their power trio selves. And what power! Gunn and Fripp pass the baton back and forth like a group of frantic relay racers especially on Heavy ConstruKction, and the subtle space-funk coming out of the soundscape and into Masque 8 gets the neck hair standing to attention.

As the sun was setting over Pittsburgh, P2 opened their show first with silence and then a nebulous soundscape. In his diary at the time, Trey rated the show as "pretty good…though we had to fight with the energy." He goes on to argue that P2 benefit from the pressure cooker environment of a club and though the opening Vector Shift sounds like they’re finding their feet they compensate by offering a snarling Sus-tayn-Z that cuts into a passionate Live Groove demonstrating why Gunn and Fripp are such an effective and dazzling partnership.

The cosmos were certainly aligned on this trio-centric evening. What was originally scheduled as a night with King Crimson at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, VA – on the third day of the third month of the third year of the new millennium – turned into the trifecta of ProjeKct Three. The (literally) eleventh hour change in format, as well as the conspicuous absence of Adrian Belew (guitar/vocals), were due to the artist's (obviously) unexpected illness. Rather than call the whole show off, the decision was made that Robert Fripp (guitar), Trey Gunn (touch guitar/talker), and Pat Mastelotto (electronic percussion) would re-form the King Crimson offshoot fraKctal ProjeKct Three for one very special occasion. These ProjeKcts were implemented after the 1997 dissolution of King Crimson's double-trio reincarnation.
