'Germinal' and Zola's Philosophical and Religious Thought (Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages)

'Germinal' and Zola's Philosophical and Religious Thought (Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages) by Philip Walker

In preparing this book, I was primarily motivated by the following two questions—questions that had haunted me ever since I had begun exploring Zola at Yale in the early fifties: what was Zola really like as a philosophical and religious thinker, and what reflections or possible reflections of his philosophical and religious thought can be found in Germinal, his masterpiece and one of the most moving and at the same time intellectually and spiritually stimulating and influential novels ever written?

Fictionalized account of the life of famed French author Emile Zola. As portrayed in the film, he was a penniless writer sharing an apartment in Paris with painter Paul Cezanne when he finally wrote a best-seller, Nana. He has always had difficulty holding onto a job as he is quite outspoken, being warned on several occasions by the public prosecutor that he risks charges if he does not temper his writings. The bulk of the film deals with his involvement in the case of Captain Alfred Dreyfus who was falsely convicted of giving secret military information to the Germans and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devils Island. Antisemitism played an important role in the real-life case but is hardly mentioned in the film. Even after the military found definitive evidence that Dreyfus was innocent, the army decided to cover it up rather than face the scandal of having arbitrarily convicted the wrong man. Zola's famous letter, J'Accuse (I Accuse), led to his own trial for libel where he was found guilty and forced to flee to England. Dreyfus was eventually exonerated and restored to his military rank.

Nika is the 25-year-old sole singer and songwriter behind Zola Jesus. Her new album Taiga is at once challenging and accessible, and is undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition.” Such encompassing purpose, she explains, would be impossible without a newfound sense of personal and artistic self. The album is a declaration of that purpose; one laced with jarring clarity in both its content and production. Taiga, the Russian name for a boreal forest pays homage to Nika’s Russian roots and her time spent growing up in rural Wisconsin on a 100-acre farm.

On her new album Taiga, the former noise-goth queen Zola Jesus moves completely into the light, delivering an LP’s worth of music that welcomes way more than it repels. The songs on Taiga, like “Go (Blank Sea)” and the glorious first single “Dangerous Days,” still have that old epic, slow-motion incandescence to them. But the arrangements are cleaner and clearer than they’ve ever been, and they do more to highlight the melodies. Meanwhile, the mix foregrounds Nika Roza Danilova’s enormous voice; it’s way more prominent than it’s been on previous Zola Jesus records. And right now, you can stream the full album at The New York Times.
