1991 COMING TOGETHER FOR THE OCCASIONAL QUARTET Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, perhaps the first and only folk super group, are nothing if not sporadic in their collective performances and recordings. Nothing wrong with that however as all members of this occasional quartet release and perform solo or in any number of configurations beautifully between times and can always be counted on to come together when the need arises. One such event followed the tragic helicopter crash that caused the deaths of concert impresario Bill Graham and his girlfriend in 1991. The tribute concert, played by many of those artists supported most notably by Graham across many years, was organised for San Francisco s Golden Gate Park, less than a week after the tragedy.

Déjà Vu is the second album by Crosby, Stills & Nash, and their first in the quartet configuration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Less than a year after the release of CSN's groundbreaking debut, the group returned with Stephen Stills's former Buffalo Springfield cohort/rival Neil Young augmenting the threesome. The result is a less concentrated but more kinetic creation; Young swims through the celestial harmonies of rock's best barbershop trio like a fly in consommé. While somewhat dated ("Almost Cut My Hair"? Wait a while, David, it'll fall out), Deju Vu is teeming with early '70s FM staples, including "Helpless", "Teach Your Children", and "Our House". One of Rock's all-time classics!

One of the most hotly awaited second albums in history – right up there with those by the Beatles and the Band – Déjà Vu lived up to its expectations and rose to number one on the charts. Those achievements are all the more astonishing given the fact that the group barely held together through the estimated 800 hours it took to record Déjà Vu and scarcely functioned as a group for most of that time…

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young had come out of Woodstock as the hottest new music act on the planet, and followed it up with Deja Vu, recorded across the second half of 1969 and released in March of 1970, supported by a tour in the summer of that year.
