For about a year after the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, it seemed as though everyone wanted to stage a rock festival. However, The Rolling Stones' disastrous Altamont free concert (documented in the film Gimme Shelter) forever tarnished the image of the rock festival in the U.S., while in Europe, the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was fortunately less deadly than Altamont, but nearly as controversial. Staged by two men with greater ambitions than practical experience (not unlike Woodstock), the festival was held on a small island off the British coast, where some of the finest rock talent of the day – Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Donovan, Jethro Tull, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, and Kris Kristofferson, among many others – were scheduled to play over the course of five days.

The Who was near the height of its powers as one of Britain's greatest hard-rock bands when they played the massive 1970 Isle of Wight Music Festival for an audience of nearly 600,000. Filmmaker Murray Lerner, who captured the festival on film for the documentary Message To Love: The Isle of Wight Festival, focuses exclusively on The Who's set with this film, in which the band took the stage at 2 a.m. and electrified the sleepy crowd. The set includes "I Can't Explain," "My Generation," "Magic Bus," the rarities "Water" and "I Don't Even Know Myself," and a truncated version of the rock opera "Tommy."

Also on the bill was the Irish band Taste, which featured a young guitarist named Rory Gallagher.

On September 18, 2015, Eagle Rock Entertainment released What’s Going On – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 by Taste. This simultaneous release on DVD, Blu-ray, 2LP, CD, and Digital Formats represents the first-ever video release of this legendary performance. What’s Going On – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival tells the story of Eire’s seminal rock band Taste. Formed in Cork, Ireland in 1966 by Rory Gallagher, Taste had a brief but influential career, releasing two studio albums in 1969 and 1970 and disbanding shortly after their legendary appearance at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival — the centerpiece of this film…

The Isle of Wight went to war in August 1914 along with the rest of Britain. German waiters were arrested. The tourist trade slumped. Foreigners were denounced and lads from all walks of life flocked to the colors.

Perhaps the most interesting and insightful of the individual films to come out of Murray Lerner's footage shot at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, Nothing Is Easy is also the most ambitious. Jumping between the 1970 events and a rather droll-humored Ian Anderson recalling the events from 2004, the film gives a lot more than an excellent account of the band's music and stage presentation of that era. We also get a close-up look at the threats of violence and hooliganism that lay beneath the peace-and-love rhetoric of the later-'60s counterculture, as the band finds itself caught in the midst of a confrontation between festival organizers trying to retake control of one sliver of the venue, and attendees – most of whom crashed the gate – refusing to cooperate and threatening mayhem.

Now on Blu-ray for the first time, Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle of Wight documents the guitarist's legendary performance before 600,000 people at this massive outdoor music and arts festival in August 1970. This unforgettable concert film experience draws heavily upon Academy Award winning Director Murray Lerner's vast archive of previously unseen performance footage and presents some of Hendrix's finest ever concert performances, including extended takes of "Machine Gun," "Red House," and other favorites such as "All Along The Watchtower," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a unique medley of "God Save The Queen" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
