The one-time meeting between guitarists Tal Farlow and Lenny Breau came about because Lorenzo DeStefano, who was making a PBS documentary (Talmage Farlow) in 1980, wanted a meeting between the veteran and a rising star. Farlow suggested Breau, and an invitation was extended and immediately accepted by the younger man. After the musicians spent time conversing in Farlow's New Jersey home, they moved to The Sign of the Times, a small nightclub in the tiny town of Rumson, to weave their musical magic…

These field recordings were done over the course of three evenings in September of 1948, just nine months before he died from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Recorded in he and his wife Martha’s NYC apartment by Fredric Ramsey Jr., they had no idea these would be the last, as he was only 61 at the time. The songs are all one-takes, and appear in the order they were recorded, with only some extraneous dialogue removed to conserve space. Plenty is included however, and contains lively descriptions and personal anecdotes that are (among other things) a rare first-person glimpse into early 20th-century African American experience.

Between 1979 and 1981, whenever Breau was in Nashville, Chet Atkins would try to get some of his music on tape. The fruit of his dedicated labor surfaced in 1981 as Standard Brands, an all-acoustic disc of gorgeous and spirited Atkins and Breau duets. These are not lengthy improvisations, rather nine concise masterpieces by two players breathing as one.

Released in 1968, 'Guitar Sounds' was reissued on CD in 2005 by Wounded Bird Records. The re-issue includes one bonus track, "Call Me".
