Official Release #109. Original Recordings And Mixes Produced By Frank Zappa. Little Dots contains more recordings of the under-documented Petit Wazoo Ensemble, which toured at the end of 1972 (previously heard officially on Imaginary Diseases). Again, the sound isn't pristine here, but it's quite listenable. The show starts with a very early version of "Cosmik Debris," but other than that and "Rollo" the material is all new (mostly due to being largely improvised). "Little Dots, Pt. 1" is a previously unreleased piece that features bassist Dave Parlato and drummer Jim Gordon in dialogue, joined by FZ on guitar about halfway though. "Little Dots, Pt. 2" kicks off with a Tony Duran slide solo, and heads into a trombone solo followed by another FZ guitar solo.

This is the one that has the Zappa online forums really buzzing! Though nothing was ever officially released from Frank's Petit Wazoo 1972 tour until 2005 (on the Zappa Family Trust release Imaginary Diseases), Frank had revisited and worked on the material that makes up this sequel to that '05 release in spurts throughout the '70s and '80s. Finally we get more from this massively improvisational period that found FZ leading a 10-piece horn-driven lineup. "Cosmik Debris," "Little Dots" (two versions), "Rollo," "Kansas City Shuffle" and two versions of "Columbia, S.C."

Formed in London in 1980, the Legendary Pink Dots moved to Amsterdam in the middle of the decade. Members throughout the band's career have been Edward Ka-Spel (vocals, keyboards) and Phil Knight (keyboards), also known as the Silver Man, with a shifting supporting cast over the years. The Dots' music is by turns melodic pop and exotic psychedelia, with classical influences, sampling, and relentlessly dark, violent, apocalyptic lyrics…

After the relatively sunny The Golden Age, Ka-Spel continues with his plan to meld psychedelia to dark and deep electronic soundscapes. Though it starts out fairly deceptively, with the haunting, beautiful, and mostly acoustic "I Love You in Your Tragic Beauty," the rest of the album descends into more complicated fare, abrasive and richly textured. As usual, many of Ka-Spel's lyrics seem mostly impenetrable, fantastical, and paranoid. The only complaint: At nearly 70 minutes, it may be a little too much darkness for a single sitting. More cohesive than Island of Jewels and more streamlined than Asylum, Any Day Now stands as one of the Legendary Pink Dots' best albums of the '80s, ex aequo with The Tower. There is no specific unifying theme this time, although alienation and estrangement seem to permeate the whole project. The Dots' keyboard patches were starting to get old by 1988, but in retrospect, this gives the album a vaguely retro charm. Edward Ka-Spel is in top songwriting shape, with "Casting the Runes," "A Strychnine Kiss" and "Neon Mariners" standing out as particularly catchy songs.
