Azure features beautiful duets by two great improvisers who proved their compatibility long ago. Bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Marilyn Crispell made some outstanding music together in Crispell's trio with late drummer Paul Motian, but their duo project also has an extensive history, until now unrecorded. With their shared sense of lyricism, their individual compositional styles and their profound background in free playing, Peacock and Crispell are exceptional musical partners. The album, self-produced in upstate New York, home territory for both musicians, contains pieces written by each one, duo improvisations and highly inventive piano and bass solos.

The gathering of this trio in February of 2000 guaranteed little except that they had demonstrated ably – on Nothing Ever Was Anyway: The Music of Annette Peacock – the ability to play together almost symbiotically. This follow-up attempts to extend the trio's reach across Peacock's music and into the terrain of the trio as an entity in and of itself. That said, not all the pieces here are new; in fact, some of them are decades old – Marilyn Crispell's "Rounds" is from 1981, Gary Peacock's "Voices of the Past" and "December Greenwings" are both from the early '80s, and Paul Motian's "Conception Vessel/Circle Dance" is from the early '70s. The trio brings to these vintage pieces not only new eyes, but the freshness of this relationship and the willingness to reinvent them.

The two-CD set Selected Works 1983-1986: Solo, Duo, Quartet is a reissue of three of Marilyn Crispell's records from the 1980s. Rhythms Hung in Undrawn Sky, a studio recording from May 1983, showcases the pianist solo; And Your Ivory Voice Sings comes from a 1985 session with drummer Doug James; finally, Quartet Improvisations, Paris 1986 also features bassist Marcio Mattos, violinist Didier Petit, and drummer Yoval Mincemacher. Therefore, this set offers a comprehensive look at the pianist's work during that period. She was still very much influenced by her mentor Cecil Taylor, although there was a feminine delicateness to her playing that made her unique.
