Otis Redding says these words just before launching into “Respect” on April 8, 1966, wrapping up the first of seven sets he’d play over the course of three days at Los Angeles’ Whisky A Go Go. A few songs earlier, he first informed the crowd that they were recording the concert with plans of releasing it as an album, playing the newly-written “Good to Me” for the second time in nine songs simply because it was the single and they needed to get it right. For his ’66 stint at the Whisky A Go Go, he was backed by his road band, the Otis Redding Revue a ten-piece group similar to the bands who supported him whenever he toured the south. This is the residency that is captured in its entirety on Stax’s six-disc box Live at the Whisky A Go Go: the Complete Recordings.

Through unseen home movies, the film reveals how Otis's 1967 tour of Britain dramatically changed his life and music. One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through to a wide pop audience (which he would indeed do with his posthumous number one single "[Sittin' On] The Dock of the Bay").

Up until The Legacy of Otis Redding (2007), there have been precious few opportunities for modern eyes and ears to behold the artist in action. The roughly hour-and-a-half "Dreams to Remember" main program is the first biopic documentary spanning Redding's complete career. None of the performances have ever been available to fans and remained completely unseen for the better part of four decades.
