SPV launched their series of archival Ike & Tina Turner collections with this double-disc set, which curiously enough is the least interesting installment in the program so far. The Archive Series, Vols. 1 & 2: Hits and Classics is devoted to songs already familiar to casual listeners, but the only real-deal Ike & Tina hits included on this set are "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "Nutbush City Limits," "Proud Mary," and "River Deep, Mountain High" (the latter two each appearing twice), while nearly everything else is a cover of a tune associated with another artist.

Simply the Best is the first greatest hits compilation by Tina Turner and was released on October 22, 1991. The album includes Turner's most popular hits since her comeback in the early-mid 1980s. It also includes three new songs that were previously unreleased; "Love Thing" (UK Airplay #13), "I Want You Near Me" (#22 UK), and "Way of the World" (UK Airplay #6 and UK #13) as well as a re-recorded dance version of Turner's classic "Nutbush City Limits", all of which were also issued as singles in 1991 and 1992…

As husband and wife, Ike & Tina Turner headed up one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit during the '60s and early '70s. Guitarist and bandleader Ike kept his ensemble tight and well-drilled while throwing in his own distinctively twangy plucking; lead vocalist Tina was a ferocious whirlwind of power and energy, a raw sexual dynamo who was impossible to contain when she hit the stage, leading some critics to call her the first female singer to embody the true spirit of rock & roll…

Tina Turner was, without a doubt, the most energetic, charismatic, non-stop performer in Rock. Having had one career, early on as half the duo of Ike & Tina Turner, with a string of hits in the early 1960s, and later her much publicized divorce from Ike Turner and reinvention as a solo artist in the late 70s and early 1980s – and her huge worldwide success as the result, Tina Turner has been one of the truly legendary names in Rock history.

In 1984, a 45-year-old Tina Turner made one of the most amazing comebacks in the history of American popular music. A few years earlier, it was hard to imagine the veteran soul/rock belter reinventing herself and returning to the top of the pop charts, but she did exactly that with the outstanding Private Dancer. And Turner did so without sacrificing her musical integrity. To be sure, this pop/rock/R&B pearl is decidedly slicker than such raw, earthy, hard-edged Ike & Tina classics as "Proud Mary," "Sexy Ida," and "I Wanna Take You Higher." But she still has a tough, throaty, passionate delivery that serves her beautifully on everything from the melancholy…

Tina Turner turns 70 in November this year. To have energy like that, not to mention LOOK the way she looks at that age, it's amazing. Vocally, she's in fine form, hitting surprisingly high notes, and alwyas with her signature power and soulfull growl. Nobody works a stage and audience like Tina Turner. The CD that comes in this set is fantastic, as it is the audio of the same show on the DVD. Live albums, by most artists, can be dicey things. Not everyone sounds great live, in fact you really don't want to hear some artists' attempt a live album nowadays, as they rely on every trick the studio can come up with. Not Tina. Her live shows have always been legendary, and her Live In Europe album is incredible. [adapted from Amazon]

Tina Tuner's lone country album, originally issued on the United Artists label in 1973 and entitled The Country of Tina Turner, is actually an unheralded masterpiece. Turner took the best songs of the day and turned them inside out to fit her soul and funk background. Among the true gems here — though nothing on this album is substandard — are her readings of "Stand by Your Man," "Soul Deep," "Good Hearted Woman" by Waylon and Willie, and "We Had It All."
