The music of Latin America has long been some of the world’s most beloved, whether Brazilian bossa nova, Argentinean tango, Cuban bolero or irresistible songs from Chile, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Pianist Edward Simon – a native of Venezuela who has made a name for himself over decades in America as a jazz pianist, bandleader and composer-arranger, along with being a Guggenheim Fellow and member of the hit SFJAZZ Collective – has created fresh, supple interpretations of melodies from all these countries for Latin American Songbook.

American Honey is a 2016 British-American drama road film written and directed by Andrea Arnold. It stars Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf, and Riley Keough. The film focuses on a road trip undertaken by Star (Sasha Lane) and a group of fellow youngsters who are travelling across the country selling magazine subscriptions. As they move from town to town, across the vast expanses of America, they listen to a lot of music in the mini-van they are travelling in. They also use music for motivation for selling, including a daily ritual of listening to ‘Choices (Yup)’ by E-40. There’s a lot of hip hop, but there are also a few moments in the film in which different sorts of music creep in, including a somewhat surprising appearance of a song by Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

Fourth album, same as the first. Rod Stewart has been mining the Great American Songbook for the better part of a decade, so it would only make sense that he would get a little bit better as time goes by. And, by some stroke of fate, Fly Me to the Moon – the fifth installment in this never-ending series and first since 2005, as Rod spent the back half of the 2000s taking songbook detours into rock and soul – is Stewart’s best album in the entire series…

Rhythm and blues was an urban black phenomenon, country a white rural one, but when Elvis Presley cut 'That's All Right' in 1954, the fusion of the genres he pioneered - soon to be dubbed rock'n'roll - gave artists license to blur the line between genres. He led the way for new sounds and styles to arrive in the charts in the '50s from the likes of Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry, all included here. So pucker up those Lucky Lips, take a swig of Love Potion Number 9 and prepare to Jump The Broomstick like a Juvenile Delinquent.

Great American Songbook: Ladies of Song is a budget-priced, three-disc sampler devoted to romantic ballads and relaxing background music from popular vocalists of the '40s. These 66 tracks feature several tracks apiece by Peggy Lee, June Christy, Doris Day, and Ella Fitzgerald, along with second-tier vocalists including Kathryn Grayson, Margaret Whiting, and Vera Lynn. While the packaging is drab, the music successfully highlights the best female singers of the era.
