Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra's 2012 album, Last Odyssey, finds the French band in fine form, creating music with Jazz as it's foundation laced with strains of Ethio and Nigerian Funk combined with Latin Percussion and rhythms. By taking the heaviest elements from each genre and distilling it down to it's most potent form, the band's true identity is revealed and sets them apart from their influences.

Cuba: The Conversation Continues was already conceived as an ambitious dream come true for bandleader Arturo O'Farrill when a synchronous event occurred in history. The night after his band had performed at the U.S. Interest Section in Havana, Barack Obama announced the normalization of diplomatic relations with the island nation after more than 50 years. This double-length set was conceived as a way of furthering the musical and cultural conversation begun by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo in the 1940s. It features compositions by six American and four Cuban composers, played by 24 musicians. There are 21 producers, five videographers, and two photographers.

While bandleader and pianist Arturo O'Farrill has always sought to preserve the legacy of Latin jazz, he's never been one to do so it for its own sake, but always for evolutionary purposes. The Offense of the Drum features his 18-piece Afro-Latin Jazz band – a whopping 28 percussion instruments from all over the globe – and a notable host of collaborators including Donald Harrison and Vijay Iyer. The program highlights the cultural sounds and prismatic influences of South America, Spain, and the Caribbean in modern jazz. "Cuarto de Colores" weds the Brazilian, Colombian and Afro-Cuban rhythms to post-bop big-band jazz.

The Offense Of The Drum may be the least cohesive record in Arturo O'Farrill's discography, but that's largely by design. Here, O'Farrill firmly adheres to his stated "artistic vision"—"to bend what the world knows as Afro Latin jazz over the acoustic horizon"—better than anywhere else in his discography. Guests galore and a belief in Afro Latin camaraderie help him realize that goal, resulting in the most intriguing and expansive offering that he's ever released.

Three years ago, the Vintage Orchestra was born through the motivation of its members. Some are reference points at the music stand; others are formidable improvisers at the clubs. Together, they make up an ensemble of rare qualities. Their first album, consecrated to Thad Jones, besides being a love declaration to one of the great writers of the 60’s, is also a proof of mastery, a great example of their abilities.
