Brazilian composer, arranger and pianist Eumir Deodato’s 1980 release, Night Cruiser, is a blend of disco, pop and jazz. The album is rooted with soulful melodies, smooth hooks and fluid horns. It showcases Deodato in fine form. A true highlight on this masterfully produced album is the magnificent collaboration with Kool & the Gang’s saxophonist Ronald Bell on the track “Uncle Funk”.

An interesting and beautiful album from Deodato, very different from his funkier work from the same period. It´s extremely short – only 24 minutes – but its a very engaging listen, even as it can make good 'background' music for chilling out with a good book (as I found out recently), which can't be said of his very lively funk interpretations of pieces like 'Also Sprach Zarathurstra'. It's dominated by lush orchestrations, most of the pieces being rather slow and often melancholic, with a few upbeat numbers ("A grande caçada", The Great Hunt, and "Bebê", written by Hermeto Pascoal). This might be one of his lesser-known albums but I think it is some of his best work.

Motion, released in 1984, is an electronic affair. Deodato fully engaged the keyboard-drenched production of the 1980s and it is in full flower here, with Linn and DMX drums programmed all over the place to further enhance the multiple layers of synthesizers that coat every cut. In fact, the very notion of song takes a back seat to the terrain of sound itself.

One of Deodato’s career highlights, this 1982 release finds the wildly talented musician incorporating a more smooth pop sound. The slick and melodious album features a guest appearance by Kelly Baretto, whose R&B style and high octave vocals blends with ease. The album features the hit singles “Keep It In The Family,” “Keep On Movin’” and the title track.

This Wounded Bird two-fer packages together two of Deodato's transitional albums from 1979 and 1980, when he was actively pursuing chart success and radio play in the United States. Knights of Fantasy, from 1979, contains trace elements of the Brazilian producer and composer's fusion persona while melding them with disco and lite funk – as many other jazzmen were also doing at the time, from Lonnie Liston Smith to the Crusaders. Fine for the dancefloor or the listening room, Night Cruiser is easily Deodato's most consistent effort of that decade.

It is another fine Deodato album but may not have the funk and rhythms of Prelude, Deodato2, First Cuckoo, and some of the others. However it is worth mentioning that this album is almost impossible to find but for those who really want it can get "Skyscrapers" because it is exactly the same record.

Brazilian Maestro Eumir Deodato has done it again. This late 2010 album recreates his great style with his claim-to-fame electric piano, and this time accompanied one more time for John Tropea and Airto Moreira, and with special guests.
