Jazz and classical, Dieter Ilg knows both worlds well. Partly to learn about the history of music, he studied classical double bass at the Freiburg music academy though he had decided to become a jazz bass player at the age of 16. Now one of the leading jazz bassists in Europe, Ilg has occupied himself for years with Guiseppe Verdi, a contemporary and Italian Counterpart of that most formidable, gigantic, and definitely most German of all opera composers, Richard Wagner. With his trio, his subtle and unique interpretation of the famed Verdi opera 'Otello' (in live and studio versions), Ilg elicited rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

'Mein Beethoven' is the logical next step for Dieter Ilg. His last album 'Parsifal' a chamber-jazz interpretation of Richard Wagner's sacred festival work closed with a whispered theme from Beethoven's Ninth ('Ode to Joy'), retitled 'Sehnsucht' (Longing) by Ilg. Now he has satisfied that yearning and recorded an entire album, 'Mein Beethoven', dedicated to this Olympian of German classical music, Ludwig van Beethoven.

Of all the great classical maestros of his generation, Leonard Bernstein was the key advocate of jazz. He was not only a profound authority on jazz music, he could also play it on the piano and used its elements when he composed. All the stranger that jazz musicians have practically never adapted Bernstein. These were the exact thoughts of ACT boss Siggi Loch who suggested to Nils Landgren that he create a tribute to the great 20th century composer. And Landgren didn t have to think twice about it: 'I have always been a fan of Bernstein…'. He put together an 'absolute dream team': the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, an exquisite jazz band, the world-class arranger Vince Mendoza and an authentic New Yorker: Janis Siegel from the legendary Manhattan Transfer.

In its ongoing series of reissues under the Double Time Jazz Collection moniker, Eagle Eye Media has put together two tribute shows on one DVD that demonstrate how a conception that is reverent yet forward-thinking can work wonderfully in one instance, and somewhat less-so in another. Tribute to John Coltrane: Live Under the Sky is an almost relentless, take-no-prisoners homage to Coltrane that works because it tries to take his music to a new place that is nevertheless respectful of its roots. Tribute to Bill Evans: Live at the Brewhouse is less successful because, while the musicianship is uniformly excellent, the lineage to Evans is less direct.

Wolfgang Dauner's creativity is varied and, more than anything, unbroken. With this CD be has made get another important accent in his career. Wolfgang Dauner's touch is multi-faceted and has many realms of feeling. They range from the nervous touch ofa Hampton Hawes or Huss Freeman to the finesse of one such as Bill Evans. Many artists such as Elvin Jones, Albert Mangelsdorff and Eddie Gomez, with whom he plaged in a combo for years, have contributed towards his musical profile. I am always glad when I have the honorto play music with him once more. Emotional sound patterns, such as »Raga lntro« or »Hypnos«, document the broad range of expression which characterizes these recordings…

Bohemian composer Leopold Kozeluch earned himself a negative historical reputation by putting himself forth as a rival to Haydn and Mozart; badmouthing the former to the latter, he received the retort that "even if you were to put the two of us together, you would still not produce a Haydn!" German clarinetist Dieter Klöcker, an indefatigable investigator of the context that surrounded the mighty Viennese trinity, sets out here to rescue Kozeluch from obscurity with performances of a trio of highly idiomatic clarinet pieces. It's hard to disagree with a newspaper critic of the day, quoted in Klöcker's excellent notes, who wrote that Kozeluch showed "great imaginative boldness" but too often offered "mere copies of ordinary life" that were "prettily dressed up like a young woman trying to please her admirers by means of flowers and ribbons."
