Ole Bull was an adventurer, violin virtuoso, composer and international star who brought the name of Norway to worldwide attention. Within music and drama he was a pioneer in the development of a national identity, and on the concert stage his fabulous playing skills and intense charisma early won him the sobriquet “the Scandinavian Paganini”. In this recording some of Ole Bull’s best known compositions appear alongside works which have only recently been rediscovered. In these compositions we are given some idea of how and why he enthralled his audiences in the nineteenth century with his incredible technique and intense charisma.

On the eve of his centenary in 2018, Sony Classical releases the most important collection, Leonard Bernstein’s classic American Columbia recordings, remastered from their original 2- and multi-track analogue tapes. This has allowed for the creation of a natural balance (for example, between the orchestra and solo instruments) that brings the quality of these half-century-old recordings, excellent for their time, up to the standards of today’s audiophiles. In addition, there has been a meticulous restoration of some earlier masterings in which LP surface noise was too rigorously eliminated at the expense of the original brilliance.

After their beautiful excursion into the textural domain on "Signs", the Dutch duo Emmens/Heij shifts back to the analogue, sequencer-driven soundworlds on "Echoes from Future Memories". In four lengthy, structured pieces, they once again venture into far-off lands with great combos of sequencer patterns, bits of e-guitar and layered soundscapes. These again stand out due to their pleasant flow and natural evolving nature. The feeling of disappearing in time can especially be sensed in sparkling 21-minute "Depth of prolonged nature" with its captivating atmospheric entrance and lush first half, followed by more pronounced sequences and textural scapes in the second one…

If, based on his most popular pieces, you've come to the conclusion that Grieg was something of a musical wimp, then you really need to hear this sensational disc. The Funeral March for Rikard Nordraak offers about eight minutes of orchestral Sturm und Drang as intense as anything by Berlioz or Mahler; and as recorded here it sounds like a tone poem of Jon Leifs, with earth-shaking percussion and cataclysmic brass. The melodrama Bergliot also deserves to be better known. Now technically "melodrama" merely means spoken dialog over music, but narrator Gorild Mauseth, who quite appropriately recites the text like a paranoid schizophrenic madwoman who just went off her meds, must be aware of the more popular definition of the term, and she makes this one of Grieg's major achievements and a truly gripping listening experience.

Beecham had an exquisite ear for detail, and his Peer Gynt has more fantasy — more subtlety, too — than anyone else's: Ase s Death and Anitra 's Dance are simply magical. So is the Symphonic Dance, and if In Autumn and the variations occasionally seem a litde thin musically, Beecham makes amends with keenness of attack and eloquent phrasing. The orchestra is superb and the transfers (which give us the variations in stereo for the first time), excellent.

After their concert at the E-live festival in October 2012, Gert Emmens & Ruud Heij spent a month or two on completing the basic musical ideas of their concert. The result was the completion of 6 new tracks. Right after finishing this new music, they decided to switch to making ambient music for some time. This resulted in the ambient album "Signs", released in April 2014. The next musical step was going back to a very retro style of Berlin School music for a next album. Realising that there still were this 6 tracks waiting for release…
