Known particularly for his orchestral output 16 symphonies and 21 concertos to date! the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho was recently described in Gramophone as having a strong claim to the title of greatest living symphonist. But as followers of the ongoing releases of his music on BIS will know, Aho has also composed a large number of works for smaller forces quartets and quintets, duos and solo pieces. On the present disc, the Finnish pianist Sonja Fräki presents his output for solo piano, comfortably fitting on one disc, but nevertheless spanning some 30 years of a long career.

A companion to Jan Lehtola’s previous recording of Kalevi Aho’s monumental organ symphony ‘Alles Vergängliche’, the present disc includes five smaller pieces by Aho for organ solo, as well as three compositions for organ and one or two other instruments. First performed at the wedding of his sister, the two brief wedding marches were the first pieces that Aho wrote for the organ, and like the later Wedding Music they are kept in a tonal idiom – as the ……

Widely regarded as one of today's most important composers of orchestral music, Kalevi Aho has written fifteen symphonies to date, but also twenty concertos. Indeed, he himself describes his on-going series of concertos for each of the main instruments in the Romantic symphony orchestra as 'one of the most important and most ambitious of my composition projects'. One of the latest additions to this series is the Horn Concerto, composed for the Finnish horn-player Annu Salminen who also performs it on the present recording……

Fearsomely talented Swedish clarinetist Martin Fröst continues his conquest of the major concerto repertoire for his instrument with this recording of Carl Nielsen's 1928 Clarinet Concerto, paired with a new concerto by Finland's Kalevi Aho. The Nielsen concerto is a dense work in which the clarinet and the orchestra spend a lot of time going their separate ways, with the path of the clarinet being very twisted indeed. Difficult arabesques on the clarinet are interrupted without warning by heraldic blasts from the orchestral horns. The concerto was greeted by early reviewers as ……

Kalevi Aho (born 1949) belongs the currently reigning generation of Finnish composers who came of age in the early 1970s in a cultural atmosphere that repudiated certain hitherto dominant musical tendencies, the chief of them being that serialism alone conferred esthetic legitimacy on a composition. Aho studied with Einojuhani Rautavaara, who encouraged his student's adventurousness. His Symphony No. 1 (1969) shows an affinity ……

For those who have followed the career of Kalevi Aho (for instance through the more than 20 discs of his music released on BIS), it will be clear that he enjoys large-scale projects. One such project has been his ‘oboe project’, composing works in every genre for the instrument. These plans can be said to have begun soon after the Sonata for oboe and piano included here, composed in 1984–85 and thus possibly the first such work for this combination by a Finnish composer……

The Kalevi Aho discography continues to grow apace and, with this issue, the ambitious BIS ‘Complete Aho’ turns to his chamber music with oboe. It is quite obvious from the very opening of the Oboe Quintet that Aho has a special feeling for the instrument and writes for it with both originality and sympathy. It comes from 1973, when the composer was in his mid-twenties, and draws you into its world immediately. More to the point, I remained in its world for the most part, though there are admittedly a few longueurs. There is a sense of nature in its opening pages and both melodic and harmonic invention are fresh, even if ……..Like the more recent Inventions and Postlude, this music holds the listener throughout. Expert playing and very good recorded sound.

Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) has stated that his works have an "abstract plot" driving his music from behind the scenes. His series of (so far) eleven symphonies certainly testifies to this statement; each of his symphonies seems to set out from a fixed point, always to confront the impassable, and always trying to reconcile that conflict in the most poignant and personal of ways. I personally find Aho to be the most brilliant composer of his generation, …..

This CD contains two symphonies by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. His multi-layered, polyphonic Fifth Symphony is coupled with the six-movement suite-like "Insect Symphony", which is regarded as one of the leading works of Finnish Post-Modernism. Based on Aho's opera Insect Life (1987), each of the six movements of the tragi-comic symphony is named after an insect, and every single movement constitutes a separate micro world of its own……

Kalevi Aho’s Third Symphony foreshadows his later works that make ingenious use of various instruments in concertante form. While several of these quasi-concertos already have been issued as part of BIS’s enterprising and valuable complete Aho edition–notably Symphonies Nos. 8 (organ) and 9 (trombone)–this earlier work for orchestra and violin, written in the 1970s and presented in absolutely terrific sound, appears as fresh as if it had been written yesterday…..
