Nat King Cole was the only black television star in Hollywood at a time when America groaned under the weight of racial segregation and prejudice. Yet he possessed a natural talent so great that these issues were seemingly swept to one side to allow him to become one of the greatest jazz icons of all time. However, behind closed doors those around him were trying to think of a way to package him as something he was not: bi-white.

From HearMusic's Opus Collection line comes Stepping Out of a Dream, a collection of Nat King Cole's higher quality songs as deemed by the compilation experts. The collection focuses on the work from the '50s and '60s, making only passing reference to his earlier piano work. The feature that sets this compilation apart from the numerous other Cole retrospectives is the song selection. The producers avoided the most obvious choices and the standards of Cole's career, replacing them with a number of basic standards from the jazz repertoire imbued with his outstanding sense of delivery and timing.

This Live at the Circle Room date has been issued before, but the bonus material of the same band from a later date makes this an extra special set. For starters, the Circle Room, in the Hotel La Salle in Milwaukee, was the town's premier jazz spot in 1946. The first 17 tracks on this CD come from four performances between September 21 and 25 of that year. Cole, with Oscar Moore and Johnny Miller, had begin his singing career in earnest, and playing in front of a lounge crowd seemed like the most natural thing in the world for him. Indeed, as bottles click, and the periodic murmur of voices in the foreground appear in the mix, the listener will be transported into Cole's magical space. From Ellington's "C Jam Blues," to "I'm in the Mood for Love," "I'm Thru With Love," and "Sweet Georgia Brown," the Cole trio kicks it with grace and elegance.

"Shadows: Songs of Nat King Cole", has been an idea brewing in Hugh's mind for a few years. Cole was one of the Jazz artists that Coltman's mother often played in the family home and his music became part of the soundtrack of Hugh's formative years before his mother's untimely death when he was 7 years old. After having released and toured two self penned albums distinctly pop on Universal records, Hugh was invited to tour and record with French/Italian Jazz pianist and producer Eric Legnini. This experience of a working Jazz musician gave him the confidence to finally approach Nat King Cole's repertoire.

Nat King Cole was a pretty fair jazz piano player, but it was his rich, warm, and smoothly elegant vocal style that made him into an icon. The standard single-disc edition contains 22 classic Cole performances, while this two-CD Deluxe edition adds 14 rare and/or previously unreleased tracks, including four never-before-heard vintage songs and previously unissued alternate takes of the Cole standards "Straighten Up And Fly Right", "Unforgettable", Mona Lisa", "The Christmas Song", and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" taken from the Nat King Cole Story sessions. Also featured are "Ain't She Sweet" and "What to Do", recorded in 1954, both of which find Cole trading vocals with his daughters Carole and Natalie, whose cross-generational 1991 duet version of "Unforgettable" helped to introduce her father to a new generation of listeners.
