Brahms is one of François-Frederic Guy’s favourite composer, he has accompanied him all his life, the first work that he performed in public was his First Concerto. The Brahms Project is, above all, conceived as an amorous dictionary of the composer and not an exhaustive complete recording.

Patchwork is a chance to join Eastern-European composers of the XXth century. Sonatas for flute and piano from Prokofiev, Enescu, Schulhoff and Muczynski show the strong personalities of the universal Masters. Those vibrant musics are made up with dancing & scintillating rhythms. The soul of the Slavic culture is being displayed here, on the model of warm and coloured mosaics of fabrics. Poetic dream-like and tender worlds are then arising, that enhance the unique musical sound of this duo.

Tikhon Khrennikov was certainly an equivocal figure in the history of 20th-century Russian music. A composer with a tendency towards popular theatrical genres and lyricism, the naively optimistic nature of his music was soon noticed by the Soviet government, which took Khrennikov under its wing and appointed him Secretary of the reorganised Union of Composers in 1948 – a post he held for no less than 43 years. During his tenure in the role, Khrennikov witnessed the persecution of numerous artists who refused to comply with the USSR's dictated enthusiasm for all things socialist in musical culture. Such behaviour surely confirms his political stance, and yet it is known that Khrennikov on more than one occasion came to the aid of several musicians, protecting them from arrest and helping to forge the careers of many young and talented artists. This recording is historic in the sense that it features 3 Soviet child prodigies: Yevgeny Kissin, Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin, now household names in western musical life, then the perfect examples of successful Soviet education and training. Khrennikov himself is the soloist in his 3rd piano concerto.

Today nothing remains of Ignaz von Beecke’s former renown as a pianist and composer. The early music lexicographers Gerber and Lipowsky were among those who celebrated his renown, but his many works have all been forgotten. And yet he created music of great originality very much absolutely worth getting to know. The present CD featuring his piano concertos is a pioneering effort representing one of the first commercial releases with works by this composer.

Louis Aubert was one of a host of the French composers whose music fell into the blind oblivion created by the dazzling talents of Debussy and Ravel. It wasn’t anyone's fault but the effect was the same as if it had been. Imaginative music of some depth and reach has failed to register with more than a few people ‘in the know’. We knew something was up when Marco Polo issued a truly outstanding CD of his orchestral music. This included Le Tombeau de Chateaubriand (1948) - a tremendously imaginative, salt-spray and sun-dazzle Breton marine picture. Aubert was born in Brittany and as Sillages proves the sea flowed through his creative veins. The Chateaubriand picture picks up on the artist's seascapes rather than being the sort of neo-classical anonymity you might have feared from the title.

Based in Leipzig with a lengthy career as principal cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Julius Klengel was a renowned soloist and revered the world over as a great interpreter and pedagogue, whose works are still in use by students today. Composed in true Romantic style, the three Concertinos were written for teaching purposes, the first coming closest to the idea of a mini-concerto but all having virtuoso elements and expressive and lyrical central movements. The Konzertstück, Op. 10 gives the piano equal status with the cello to create a thrilling conclusion to any programme.
