In 2015 Ryuichi Sakamoto composed the music for Nagasaki: Memories Of My Son, the latest film by legendary Japanese filmmaker Yoji Yamada whose career has spanned six decades and over 80 films. Yamada is perhaps the last director to have lived through what is now known as the Golden Age of Japanese cinema – a period that gave rise to Kurosawa, Mizoguchi and Ozu. The film tells the story of Nobuko Fukuhara, a mother who has lost he son in the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. It is an intimate character study of Nobuko, whose son begins to communicate to hear as a ghost.

Ryuichi Sakamoto's first solo album appeared before he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in late 1978, after the young keyboardist had earned his M.A. in music from Tokyo University. Six long instrumentals make up this CD, but apart from a taste for Asian-sounding synth lines, they hint at very little of what was to come in YMO. "Thousand Knives" is a long disco-lite jazzy workout with a very un-synthesized guitar solo by Kazumi Watanabe (who would later join YMO on tour and have his solo album produced by Sakamoto). Side two's "Da Neue Japanische Electronische Volkslied" and "The End of Asia" (later revamped in YMO) are closest to the new wave of Japanese electronic music that he would spawn. "Island of Woods" and "Grasshoppers" trade in rhythm for sound landscapes, and the sort of cheeriness that would pop up later in Sakamoto's childrens movie scores. Harry Hosono turns up on one track, and generally the album is a pleasant, if unadventurous, listen.

Ryuichi Sakamoto has announced a new studio album, async, out April 28 via Milan. It’s the Japanese composer’s first studio album since 2012’s Three, with Jaques Morelenbaum and Judy Kang, and his first solo album in 8 years. Sakamoto recorded and conceived of the album in New York, taking inspiration from “everyday objects, sculpture, and nature,” according to a press release. Find the tracklist and artwork below. A world premiere listening event for the album (in 5.1 surround sound) will take place at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, which runs from March 23-26. Sakamoto’s also set to perform on April 25 and 26 at Park Avenue Armory Veterans Room in New York. The new album follows his 2015 score for Alejandro González Iñárritu's film The Revenant (where he was assisted by the National's Bryce Dessner and German musician Alva Noto). It’s also his first studio album since his recovery from cancer in 2015.

Mission Life in Cree-Ojibwe Country: Memories of a Mother and Son (Our Lives: Diary, Memoir, and Letters) by Elizabeth Bingham Young
English | Mar. 19, 2015 | ISBN: 1771990031 | 336 Pages | PDF | 9 MB

In May of 1868, Elizabeth Bingham Young and her new husband began a long journey from Hamilton, Ontario, to the Methodist mission of Rossville. For the next eight years, she lived in two mission houses, Norway House and then Berens River. Unprepared for the difficult conditions and the "eight months long" winter, and unimpressed with "eating fish twenty-one times a week," the young Upper Canada wife rose to the challenge.
