With this recording, Joshua Redman attempts a long-form composition for the first time, a series of eight numbers that form a cycle of sorts. The promotional buzz claimed that Redman was taking stock of his music ten years after winning the Thelonious Monk competition, the event that had the effect of launching him full-blown into the big time. Whether or not that's true, there is a predominantly reflective, thoughtful tone about this quartet session, split between written-out passages and flat-out improvisations.

Much is said about records once they've come into the world, but little is discussed about the motive(s) surrounding the birthing of a record. Sometimes it's simply about marketing, exposure, money, and pure narcissism. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that on some level(s), and many classic albums have been made with little to nothing else in mind, but it's harder to appreciate the artistry and the artist when records made for such reasons appear on the horizon. It's far more satisfying to sit back and soak in the beauty and power of expertly-crafted music that's been made in the name of self-expression by an artist who simply wants to capture who he (or she) is on a record. At least that's the case with this one.

Some artists maintain a busy release schedule, putting out an album a year—sometimes, in the case of musicians like guitarist Bill Frisell, even more frequently—while others, for a variety of reasons, are less prolific. Pianist Edward Simon has, in recent years, been issuing albums with broader distribution under his own name—which automatically discounts 2010's independently released but undeniably fine Danny Boy—about once every three years on labels ranging from The Netherlands' Criss Cross to Italy's Cam Jazz.

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen had already reached the upper echelons of the jazz world when he put Triveni into motion, but this trio's debut—Introducing Triveni (Anzic Records, 2010)—still managed to mark a quantum leap in his artistry. The Israeli-born horn man first made stateside ripples when he placed third in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition in 1997 and those ripples turned to waves as he became an established presence on the scene. A string of albums in his own name, work with his equally sublime siblings in the 3 Cohens, and a slew of sideman dates helped him climb the ladder of success, but his ascendancy was marked by his arrival as the trumpet heir in the SFJAZZ Collective and the formation of this trio.

Since coming out the other side of a deep personal tragedy, Kenny Werner has resumed his career with a vengeance. First there was No Beginning, No End (Half Note, 2010), which dealt with the tragic loss of his daughter, Katheryn , in a 2006 car accident, as the pianist and wife, Lorraine, found the way from anger and grief to acceptance and hope through spiritual guidance and music. The smaller-scoped but potent Balloons (Half Note, 2011) came a mere six months later, from a 2010 live performance with his regular touring band. Now, just another half-year on, Werner returns with Institute of Higher Learning, a vibrant big band session that teams the veteran pianist with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, for a set of four originals and one cover.

This album was created in November 2016 and features the following musicians: Magnus (guitar, synths), Hasse (doun douns, bass, talking drum), Dr Space (synths), Jiri (bass), Tim (drums), KG (sitar, guitar, synths), and Jonathan (violin, guitar, bass, farfisa, and others). ‘Reflections…’ is an album side track featuring sitar and violin. ‘ESP’ is a more electronic synth based track to start and later has some heavy guitar. ‘The Oracle’ is the main track of the album, a 40min adventure starting with a synth drone and eastern vibe but then it takes off into space. Features some of the most amazing sitar and very cool violin.
