Action Time Vision opens with the Damned’s “New Rose,” which Cherry Red declares “the first British punk 45” and which hasn’t lost a shred of its power. Things proceed more or less chronologically from there, with a healthy dose of sides from trailblazing labels like Stiff, Chiswick, Small Wonder and Step Forward. That latter label was founded by Miles Copeland, brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland and a man who deserves more credit for cobbling together a US club circuit for “alternative” touring bands (British and American) that exists to this day.

Grooving its way out of your hi-fi like a late night television ad with a mind of its own comes Billboard Top Hits: 1975-1979. A generous of mix of R&B and AM pop-charting singles, the set boasts three Elton John songs, two tracks from KC & the Sunshine Band, the aching disco of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," a few forgotten nuggets, and, of course, "Y.M.C.A." Because of their adherence to each year's charts, the five discs do have some continuity issues. But it's almost more fun that way. One second you're getting your groove on to Heatwave's "Boogie Nights," the next, you're screwing your face up to sing like Leo Sayer in "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"." Rhino's Have a Nice Day and Disco Years series are more detailed in both hits and rarities. However, Billboard Top Hits benefits from its own brevity, and is as easy to enjoy than an old episode of Happy Days.

Lovin Mighty Fire is Howard Williams third Japanese music compilation for the Ace Records house of labels - this time, for BGP International. Covering 50 Cent, Cat Stevens, Faith Evans, and more on steelpan drums should not sound this gimmick-less. It helps that the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is, first and foremost, a strong funk ensemble. The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is a pet project of the German instrumental group the Mighty Mocambos, a practiced collective that makes versatile deep funk. Bacao is a vehicle for bandleader and guitarist Björn Wagner's dedicated enchantment with the steelpan drum, which he and three other band members play on a new debut full-length called 55.

Hoelderlin (formed as Hölderlin) started out playing cover tunes in Germany in the 1960s until they received an offer for a record contract in the early 1970s. The band was led by two brothers, Christian and Joachim Grumbkow, who wrote most of the music. The debut-album "Hölderlin's Traum" was released in 1972 with a nine-piece line up, including female vocals and instruments like the Mellotron, Grand piano, violin, cello, sitar, tablas and flute. Their sound is a progressive blend of rock, jazz and folk. Troubles soon arose when the band's producer wanted to have the band change their sound. After a long three year legal battle, the band was able to get rid of their contract, slightly change their name and release their second album, "Hoelderlin" in 1975. The band called their music 'romantic rock', it sounded more jazzy and it contained echoes from King Crimson and Genesis…
