The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille – whose associations have ranged from a long collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading the collective Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman – makes his ECM leader debut with The Declaration of Musical Independence. Featuring a quartet with guitarist Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and bassist Ben Street, the album kicks off with an artfully oblique interpretation of John Coltrane’s “Coltrane Time,” led by Cyrille’s solo drum intro.

The story behind this duo setting by legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille and venerable tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry was initiated by Max Koslow who routinely attends New York City's fabled Village Vanguard venue on Thursday evenings. After hearing the twosome perform, he proposed they record a set in the studio for his nascent Brain Schism Productions. Indeed, the artists' synergy comes into full swing from the onset for a production that clocks in at 38-minutes.

The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille whose associations have ranged from a long, vintage collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading current all-star collective Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman makes his ECM debut as bandleader on The Declaration Of Musical Independence and what a band it is! Guitarist Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and double bassist Ben Street are perfectly in synch with Cyrille throughout this set that opens with a Coltrane cover (Coltrane Time) but is otherwise all-original, including three pieces composed by the entire quartet in the studio.

Pianist Sophia Domanchic gets some wonderfully freewheeling company here – the bass of Mark Helias and drums of Andrew Cyrille – both perfect accompaniment for her long, lively lines on piano! The tunes are all quite long – most stretch past the 10 minute mark – and have a very open, expressive feel – a way of being quite bold on the keyboard, yet still managing to swing, too – the kind of groove that could only come with such accomplished rhythm players like these. The set's got a sparkle and charm that's undeniable – and both Helias and Cyrille get in some beautiful solo moments that are quite inventive. Titles include "Vestiges", "How To", "Dr Licks", "En El Barrio De Triana", and "Aubade".

It is said that one grows wiser and mellower with age, as proven by this recording from Coleman Hawkins that is a successful follow-up to his previous Moodsville album At Ease. There is a difference, as Kenny Burrell joins the legendary tenor saxophonist in this quintet setting, with no threat of upstaging or even a hint of any real showcasing of the guitarist's then developing laid-back side.

Guitarist Ben Monder first recorded for ECM as a member of the Paul Motian Band on “Garden of Eden” in 2004, and Amorphae was originally conceived as a series of duets for Ben and Paul. A first exploratory duo session was recorded in 2010. After Motian’s death the following year it was decided to expand and complete the project with another highly influential and innovative drummer, Andrew Cyrille, adding also Pete Rende on synthesizer on two pieces…
