In rural Sweden of the early 1950s, little Elina goes to school again after recovering from tuberculosis, the same illness that has killed her father a few years earlier. Elina's family belongs to Finnish-speaking Finns frowned upon by a staunch schoolmistress who starts hounding Elina for questioning her authority. Elina's mother, sister, and a liberal young male teacher all try to mediate the ensuing battle of wills between Elina and Miss Holm.

On the inside we learn she is quite insecure, and has a deep crush on her friend, Rob. Sooz is working on an art project and tries to photograph people's tattoos, but no one shows up to be her model. Jamie says it's because she scares men. Rob, seeing that Sasha is going out with a new guy, offers to pose for Sooz to get Sasha jealous and turns up at her house. The Philosophy of "As If": A System of the Theoretical, Practical and Religious Fictions of Mankind

The Philosophy of "As If": A System of the Theoretical, Practical and Religious Fictions of Mankind by Hans Vaihinger, David G. Payne
English | February 27th, 2015 | ISBN: 1508663750 | 314 Pages | EPUB | 0.64 MB

Vaihinger… shows that thought is primarily a biological function turned into a conscious art. It is an art of adjustment, whose chief instrument is the construction of fictions by which men may manage to live. Thought is to be tested not by correspondence to an objective reality (that fiction is neatly disposed of) nor by its mirroring in consciousness an objective external world.

As If Silent and Absent: Bonds of Enslavement in the Islamic Middle East by Ehud R. Toledano
English | July 12, 2007 | ISBN: 0300126182 | 288 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

This groundbreaking book reconceptualizes slavery through the voices of enslaved persons themselves, voices that have remained silent in the narratives of conventional history. Focusing in particular on the Islamic Middle East from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, Ehud R. Toledano examines how bonded persons experienced enslavement in Ottoman societies.
