Aurora Orchestra, together with conductor Nicholas Collon, is an innovative, energetic and talented ensemble. It has already amassed a good amount of praise from the critics, quickly establishing itself as the most significant new British chamber orchestra in a generation. Although known almost exclusively for his instrumental concertos and the spurious Adagio attributed to him, Tomaso Albinoni was mainly a man of the theater; he composed 81 operas and, late in life, made his living as a singing coach. However, the best efforts of posterity to catch up with Albinoni's operatic creations are significantly stymied by the fact that only three of his stage works are fully extant, the rest preserved only in occasional and fugitive fragments in the form of single arias and other bits and pieces. "Il Nascimento dell'Aurora" is a serenata – or more specifically, a "festa pastorale" – a kind of courtly entertainment not really meant to be specifically dramatic or compelling and, in this case, dealing with the birth of Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora ….

Finnish trumpeter/composer Verneri Pohjola comes from a well-established family of jazz musicians: both his father, famed bassist Pekka Pohjola, and his younger brother, trombonist Ilmari, join him here. Pohjola was voted Musician Of The Year by Finnish jazz critics in 2004, but Aurora is his debut as leader. This is a work of immense beauty which benefits not only from Pahjola's expressive trumpet playing and writing, but also from exceptional musicianship from every single one of its 15 players.

Based on a real story, Sofía Olivari is a small town elementary school teacher who has been rejected twice by adoption agencies. While she and her husband are applying a third time, she reads in a newspaper that a newborn baby has been found in a dumpster. She feels that the baby deserves a burial, but because the baby has no legal identity, she goes to a judge. He insists that there's nothing to be done, but she'll keep on fighting for baby Aurora ("She deserves a name too").
Reinhard David Flender studied theology, piano, composition, and musicology in Hamburg, Münster, und Jerusalem. After winning the first prize in the piano competition "Jugend musiziert" in 1971, he began his studies in Hamburg in 1972. In 1977, he received a piano diploma from the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold. From 1977 to 1981, he studied composition with Josef Tal and musicology with Israel Adler at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
