Since Ella Fitzgerald never produced a songbook of Leonard Cohen songs, Jennifer Warnes's plush 1986 tribute is the next best thing. The sleekly seductive "First We Take Manhattan" is gilded by the guitars of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robben Ford. Warnes doesn't add much to an evergreen like "Bird on a Wire," but she lays claim to the noirish title song with a confidential vocal that complements the chamber-pop arrangement. "Song of Bernadette" is a ripened gem, and the selection where Warnes lets down her refined vocal technique to reveal deep emotions. More often, Warnes is as professionally accomplished on this well-chosen set as her band of studio pros. –John Milward

A limited guitar player at best, and with a voice that hardly spans a couple of octaves, Leonard Cohen has nonetheless fashioned a legacy of gorgeously realized songs that reach deep into the heart of lust, ill- and well-fated romance, hope, and redemption, and if he doesn't sing like an angel, he could certainly mesmerize one with the melody, lilt, and power of his songs…

Songs of Love and Hate is one of Leonard Cohen's most emotionally intense albums – which, given the nature of Cohen's body of work, is no small statement. (…) If Songs of Love and Hate isn't Cohen's best album, it comes close enough to be essential to anyone interested in his work.

Mark Kozelek—the artist behind Sun Kil Moon—has released a new EP under his own name, as Stereogum points out. It’s called Night Talks and is out via his Caldo Verde Records. The five-song effort includes a cover of Kath Bloom’s “Pretty Little Flowers” (featuring Bloom) and a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat” (which he performed at a Cohen tribute this past November). There is also an acoustic version of “I Love Portugal” from Sun Kil Moon’s 2017 LP Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood.

On 13th October 1979, Leonard Cohen began his most extensive tour to date in support of his sixth studio album, Recent Songs , with a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden. Entitled 'The Smokey Life Tour', this 48-concert European leg of what would eventually become a world tour (ultimately encompassing too Australia, the USA, and in November 1980, Israel) progressed through Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, England and Ireland. Cohen surrounded himself with a coterie of superb musicians. As a nucleus, he co-opted the Austin, Texas-based jazz band, Passenger (Steve Meador on drums, Roscoe Beck on bass, Mitch Watkins on guitar, Bill Ginn on keyboards and Paul Ostermayer on sax and flute).

SUPERB BROADCAST RECORDING FROM PARIS IN 1976 The legendary Olympia concert hall, close to the Opéra in Paris, made a fine venue for this excellent 1976 performance by Leonard Cohen and his band. At this relatively early point in his musical career, Leonard was demonstrably more popular in Europe than in any other continent. He was particularly revered in France – hence there were no less than four consecutive concerts in Paris during his extensive 55 date European tour in the spring and summer of 76.

Joan Baez is an American folk singer, songwriter, musician, and activist, whose contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. This album has been recorded live in the bullring of Bilbao, Spain. It featured twelve songs, six of which were performed in English, five in Spanish and one, "Txoria Txori", in Basque. Most of the songs had been performed and recorded by Baez previously, with the exception of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat". "Gracias a la Vida" is a duet with singer Mercedes Sosa.
