Immunology and Evolution of Infectious Disease

Immunology and Evolution of Infectious Disease by Steven A. Frank
English | July 21, 2002 | ISBN: 0691095957 | 359 Pages | PDF | 2 MB

From HIV to influenza, the battle between infectious agents and the immune system is at the heart of disease. Knowledge of how and why parasites vary to escape recognition by the immune system is central to vaccine design, the control of epidemics, and our fundamental understanding of parasite ecology and evolution. As the first comprehensive synthesis of parasite variation at the molecular, population, and evolutionary levels, this book is essential reading for students and researchers throughout biology and biomedicine.

Arenaviruses I: The Epidemiology, Molecular and Cell Biology of Arenaviruses (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology) (Volume 1) by M.B.A. Oldstone
English | Apr. 8, 2002 | ISBN: 3540422447 | 209 Pages | PDF | 4 MB

Since the subject of arenaviruses was visited by Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology 14 years ago, enormous advances have been made in this area. The receptor for several arenaviruses, alpha-dystroglycan, was identified, the replication strategy of these viruses was decoded, and application of a reverse genetics system for studying viral gene function and viral biology is well underway.

History of Medical Bacteriology and Immunology  eBooks & eLearning

History of Medical Bacteriology and Immunology

History of Medical Bacteriology and Immunology by William D. Foster
English | July 23, 1970 | ISBN: 0433106905 | 244 Pages | PDF | 17 MB

There have been three histories of bacteriology published in English. The earliest was The Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif. First published in February 1926, a second printing was called for in the March of the same year and the book has since been repeatedly reprinted. This must surely be one of the most successful, if not the most successful of books on medical history. Although written in a popular, journalistic style fully comprehensible to the layman it deserves both its success and the respect of the serious medical historian for it is a pioneer work based on extensive original research. In a second volume, Men Against Death, published in 1932, de Kruif added essays on the work of a number of other bacteriologists so that his two books cover in a most interesting way the exciting early history of bacteriology.
