There were times when big bands were a defining part of our society┬┤s musical cultural scene. Today only a few jazz big bands exist, and it appears the reasons for this change are not artistic, but rather financial. In Germany public radio stations are responsible for the funding of big bands, and in France the Orchestre National de Jazz sets the standard. Meanwhile in Austria, one ensemble has shown above all others that orchestral concepts are far from exhausted: the JBBG - Jazz Bigband Graz.

A wonderful artifact, this is a prime slice of the latter-day Satchmo with a small all-stars band working through a relatively typical set. The performance ranges from solid to excellent, with the occasional odd flub (such as the uncertain return after Danny Barcelona's first drum solo on "Basin Street Blues"), but the quality of the recording is the key element. The Mobile Fidelity gold CD edition adds three tracks to the Storyville original, and provides a clear, uncluttered sound field with excellent separation. The resulting album is a treat to hear. ~ Steven McDonald, Rovi

Twenty years ago Rainer Tempel was still a student in Nuremberg (jazz piano, diploma thesis in 1998 about Vince Mendoza). Twenty years ago the first album of the Rainer Tempel Big Band ("forward + back", 1996) also appeared. Since then, much has happened: Rainer Tempel founded a whole series of other bands, from the trio to the Elftett strength; He composed for classical musicians and jazz ensembles such as the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and the big bands of HR, RIAS, SWR and NDR (with whom he even won an echo jazz for "Petite Fleur", ACT 2014). He was a keyboarder in various bands - with the jazz / hip-hop trumpeter Joo Kraus, the singer / songwriter Ron Spielman or the Dieter Thomas Kuhn band; And he gave his experiences further: as a professor at music colleges in Lucerne and Stuttgart, he even took over as head of the Institute for Jazz & Pop in 2013 - in short: he has developed into a successful, sought-after and versatile musician.

During his tragically short life, Scott LaFaro quickly developed into one of the most advanced bassists around, competing with Charlie Haden and Charles Mingus. He emphasized high notes, could play with great speed, and his interplay with Bill Evans in their trio was mutually stimulating and influential. LaFaro originally played clarinet and tenor before settling on bass while in college. He was with Buddy Morrow's band (1955-1956), toured with Chet Baker (1956-1957), and worked during the next few years with Ira Sullivan, Barney Kessel, Cal Tjader and Benny Goodman, among others.

There may never be a setting as beautiful or a locale as ideal as a breathtaking ocean view complete with the sounds of beautiful Latin jazz floating over the ocean breeze. The fifth CD in the Colors of Latin Jazz series sets the scene for a collection of contemporary, smooth jazz peppered with Latin rhythms and percussion. This CD is a musical hybrid that's at once cool and smooth, yet hot and spicy! Up first is Jeff Linsky's beauty "Up Late," originally issued on Up Late by Concord Picante. His dynamic colors beckon the listener to "Come With Me," the second track sung and scatted by the inimitable Tania Maria on a cool samba just right for a hot day or night. Another smooth scorcher, "San Sabastian" by Ed Calle with special guest Arturo Sandoval is some of Sandoval's most melodic sax work bordered on all sides by the beauty of Spanish guitar, brass, and strings.

Glenn Miller's reign as the most popular bandleader in the U.S. came relatively late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he utterly dominated popular music, and over time he has proven the most enduring figure of the swing era, with reissues of his recordings achieving gold record status 40 years after his death. Miller developed a distinctive sound in which a high-pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower, and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. Miller's approach is not much appreciated by jazz fans…

The Edge: David Axelrod At Capitol Records 1966-1970 is a 2005 compilation album by producer/conductor David Axelrod. Released by Capitol Jazz, The Edge looks at part of his own discography while showing his contributions when he was the A&R for Capitol's Black music division by bringing in Lou Rawls, Letta Mbulu and others. His blend of orchestral jazz soul would become a sampling tool for countless hip-hop songs in the 1990's when producers dabbled in his output.
