A superbly atmospheric John Barry score effectively conveyed the mood of swinging London for this 1965 film by Richard Lester. Usually playing around with variations of the haunting main theme, Barry used vivacious horns, melancholic strings, and above all a groovy jazz organ (played by Alan Haven). A couple of the tracks don't work well in isolation: the vaudevillian "Something's Up!," and the vocal version of the main theme (not used in the film) by mediocre singer Johnny De Little. But overall, it's got a consistently captivating groove, rating as one of Barry's best scores.

Music Composed and Conducted by John Barry. King Kong is one of Hollywood's most legendary creations, from the groundbreaking 1933 original to the highly anticipated Peter Jackson remake. In 1976 producer Dino De Laurentiis struck box-office gold with his own incarnation of the story, starring Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange, and a colossal forty-foot model of Kong. The film was a massive production with ambitious special effects. Scoring the remake of one of the most famous films in Hollywood history was one of the few composers with the clout and talent to forge ahead with his own style: John Barry. The original's Max Steiner had practically invented the film score genre with the project, yet Barry was known for a completely different approach – eschewing "Mickey Mousing" in favor of melody, mood and large-scale symphonic structures.

An American In Paris named Mo misses her flight with her tour group and has become stranded in the City of Light. She meets a debonair French banker named Xavier. Pretty quickly he informs her he’d like to sleep with her despite the fact that he is married. And therein lies the tale of an affair to remember and love conquers all. Directed by Richard Marquand (fresh from directing Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi), the film stars Karen Allen as the spunky Mo Alexander, and Thierry Lhermitte as Xavier, the cocky, suave, rich, and good-looking Frenchman. As the Gershwins wrote, who could ask for anything more? Well, the audiences and critics of 1984, because they just weren’t buying Until September. But eventually, on cable and video, the film found fans, fans that found the love story appealing, and the scenery irresistible. But making the whole thing doubly appealing and irresistible is the gorgeous score by John Barry.

La-La Land Records presents, in association with Paramount Pictures and Capitol Records, the premiere release of both John Barry’s unused score and Michel Colombier’s score to the 1986 Paramount Pictures action/adventure motion picture THE GOLDEN CHILD, starring Eddie Murphy, Charlotte Lewis, Charles Dance and directed by Michael Ritchie. Mr. Barry’s (FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, BODY HEAT, A VIEW TO A KILL, DANCES WITH WOLVES) unused orchestral score is simply put, wondrous – a powerful, majestic work brimming with action, suspense and romance that strongly recalls the recently departed composer’s 80s Bond period while still retaining its own robust identity. Composer Michel Colombier’s (RUTHLESS PEOPLE, THE MONEY PIT, AGAINST ALL ODDS) score, only a portion of which has been previously released, is finally given its proper due here as well, showcasing the composer’s knack for traditional action scoring blended with the era’s contemporary, synth-based pop sound.

John Barry was one of the best-known composers of soundtrack music of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, but his career carried him through a multitude of music genres and styles. He was best-known in film in connection with his work on the James Bond pictures, but Barry was also the holder of five Academy Awards, none of them for the Bond movies. Born Free (for which he won Oscars for Best Score and Best Song), The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa, and Dances with Wolves are hardly unknown films or scores.

Our Encore editions usually stick to the original track list and running order, but Jagged Edge never had individual track titles. And now it does! Plus we have remastered it and re-sequenced it for an all-new listening experience. There wasn’t any additional music, so we couldn’t offer this as a Deluxe Edition, however, we have really shined up this Jagged Edge. A beautiful, bittersweet John Barry love theme along with some atypical suspense music are hallmarks of this very distinct entry in Barry’s legendary filmography.

An excellent collection of work from the great John Barry – one that focuses on his famous contributions for the James Bond films – but also includes other soundtrack and instrumental material as well! The set begins with the John Barry Plays 007 record – a brilliant album that not only features some instrumental soundtrack themes, but also includes some great mod Barry instrumentals from the 60s – kind of a nice link to his sophisticated film music, and some of his smaller combo work! Titles include "Kinky", "Fancy Dance", "007", "From Russia With Love", "Big Shield", "Aliki", "Monkey Feathers", and "The London Theme". Next are two tracks from Elizabeth Taylor In London – "Lovers & Browning", with a recitation by Taylor – plus the jazzy instrumental "The London Waltz". Next are two tracks from Zulu – a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine – followed by 15 more groovy instrumentals that include "Tit Willow Twist", "Hit & Miss", "Easy Beat", "Beat Girl", "The Lolly Theme", "Spinnerree", "Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone", "The Sun's Hooray", and "Saturday's Child".
