There are many great things to enjoy, but what really jumped out at me in this recording was Ravel’s astonishingly good orchestration. We’ve all heard the music umpteen times, and, like many comfortable things, we tend to take it for granted. Reiner and his heroes will refresh your memory of Ravel’s (and Moussorgsky’s) genius with unassailable playing and a rich interpretation. Like all great things, it just seems right. The magic continues with the warm recorded sound. The soundstage is wide if not deep, and imaging is similar to the hall perspective.

Reached #1 on Billboard Country Albums 1976

Released in late 1976, at the height of Willie mania, The Troublemaker is Willie Nelson's first all-gospel album, but country gospel in his hands doesn't sound like traditional country gospel – it's a Willie album, through and through, performed with the freewheeling Family as support. Consequently, it's every bit as wonderfully idiosyncratic as any of his other mid-'70s work and, in some ways, even more so, because inspirational songs and religious material are usually not given arrangements as imaginative and free-spirited as this.

Reached #1 on Billboard Jazz Albums 1983

Keyboardist Bob James and acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh struck gold with this session, recently reissued on CD. The formula hasn't changed much in succeeding years. Both Klugh and James are capable musicians; they demonstrated on this collection of light, innocuous melodies and occasionally interesting backbeats a high degree of professionalism. Klugh is a first-rate guitarist whose solos are concise and nicely delivered, but frequently sound thin. James' piano and electric keyboard playing is a puzzling combination of flawlessness and lifelessness.

Fritz Reiner includes three very interesting pieces on LSC-2183. He chose well. The pieces highlight the greatness that is Fritz Reiner and his amazing Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As represented here, the “Reiner Sound” - rich, detailed and incredibly dynamic - is married unswervingly to honest interpretations of the highest musical caliber. Reiner is rarely surpassed in his RCA repertoire.

James Leary’s hand picked jazz quartet featuring Eddie Harris on saxophone and vocals, Billy Childs on piano, and Ralph Penland on drums. James, of course, anchors the quartet on string bass. Featuring six standards and two excellent originals, this is a great straight ahead jazz recording.
