Lesley Duncan’s debut album was a modestly engaging slice of early-’70s singer/songwriter rock, though not distinctive enough amidst a rapidly crowding field to command attention. Somewhat like Elton John, she blended parts of folk-rock, the emerging singer/songwriter movement, pop (though less pop than John), and bits of the Band’s gospel-rock flavor. Indeed, the record is best known for Duncan’s own version of her composition “Love Song,” covered by Elton John on Tumbleweed Connection (and way back in 1969 by a pre-“Space Oddity” David Bowie on a home demo that’s since been bootlegged).

If Not for You is the debut studio album by Australian singer Olivia Newton-John, released in November 1971 by Festival Records. The album was released on the Pye International label in the UK as Olivia Newton-John, with slightly different covers. As a covers album, If Not for You features mostly songs previously recorded from contemporary artists of 1960s and early 1970s. She made several performances to promote If Not for You and her follow-up album, Olivia, including an international tour with British singer Cliff Richard. It was her first album released by Festival Records, which would release all her albums in Australia until its dissolution in 2005. It also has Newton-John's first works with her long-time musical partner, John Farrar.

This very nicely mastered UK album covers Olivia Newton John's early career, the pre-Grease era. Her voice is crystal clear and in great shape. Her own versions of "If We Only Have Love" & "The Air That I Breathe" are unsurpassed. The album also features two tracks written by Olivia: "Changes" & "Rosewater". Both tracks are stand out recordings showcasing Olivia's early songwriting abilities. Her kindness and love shine on this album. The CD also features great linear notes with a nice biography of Olivia.

Duncan Lloyd is probably best known as the guitarist and musical driving force behind Mercury Music Prize nominated U.K. band, Maximo Park, but Lloyd’s frenetic outpouring has also seen him busy with various projects including Decade In Exile, Nano Kino and solo work under his own name. It is his solo work which now calls for our attention, with the release of new album, IOUOME.

A movie soundtrack that's about half instrumental, but it's not a tossoff: the vocal tracks are as carefully produced and enjoyable as Elton's "real" albums. Highlights include the gentle title track (a Top 40 single), the rocking "Honey Roll," and the anthemic "Can I Put You On." Taupin's lyrics are unusually direct meditations on love and friendship; if you like his more intellectual lyrics, you'll be disappointed, but if you find them annoying, this is an improvement. The low point is a syrupy Mantovani-like stringfest, "Seasons."
