Live at Midem with Stan Getz, Paul Horn, Mike Garson, and Jazz Gala '80 are a continuation of a new tradition at Midem — a performance and recording of major jazz artists and the up and coming international jazz stars at the world record convention. Stan Getz traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, taking leave from a gig at Bubba's and arrived in Cannes with his musicians: Andy Leverne, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Victor Jones, on the morning of the 23rd of January '80. The show and recording session were that evening taped with a twenty-four track mobile unit from Paris. Paul Horn was in Cannes for Midem, having traveled from his home in Canada. Sugar Blue and Patrick Artero arrived the day before by train from Paris, and Gayle Moran, Joe Farrell and Mike Garson suffered a time differential of nine hours between the South of France and their homes in Los Angeles. The show's form and substance took shape at the rehearsel. Jean Claude Ast, the French assistant producer orchestrated the complex rehearsel schedule with musicians and technical people staying at dozens of hotels in Cannes.

Having established himself as an imaginative technical wizard in the forefront of the fusion movement during the 1980's, guitarist Mike Stern has left an indelible mark on the way the instrument is utilized in the jazz idiom. But there would be an unforeseen event that would test his physical and emotional will to overcome adversity. In July of 2016 Stern suffered a serious accident when he tripped over construction debris leaving his apartment in New York City.

"Westbrook's faithful and wonderfully good humored rendition of The Beatles' 1969 album 'ABBEY ROAD' underscores its music-hall whimsy and ravishing melodies. The Beatles purists I have played it for are as delighted as I am." Gary Giddins - Village Voice. "John Lennon, the most progressive of The Beatles, would have been delighted … a real adventure on the borderlines between pop and jazz." Manfred Schmidt - Stereo Magazine, Germany 'CD of the Month'. A quirky marriage of rock, vaudeville and jazz improvisation… Westbrook finds unexpected depths in over familiar songs.’ Clive Davis - The Times.

The Mike Westbrook Orchestra's 1982 opus The Cortège, initially released as a sprawling three-disc vinyl set by Original Records (re-released on CD by Enja) and winner of that year's Grand Prix du Disque de Montreux, is an often stunning work of massive scope and an indisputable highlight of Westbrook's career. Originally commissioned by the Bracknell Jazz Festival in 1979 and subsequently performed at a number of European festivals, The Cortège is themed around the idea of a New Orleans funeral procession, from its dirges to its final exuberance, but this theme is used as a framework for excursions into territory that is pure Westbrook – namely a marriage of creative jazz orchestra and European poetry written by Federico García Lorca, Arthur Rimbaud, Hermann Hesse, William Blake, and others.

Pinning Mike Keneally down to any specific genre is useless. After touring with Frank Zappa’s band in 1988 as a guitarist and keyboard player, Keneally eventually began releasing solo albums in 1992. These albums have run the gamut from lo-fi guitar crunch (Boil That Dust Speck) to dark, experimental instrumentals (Nonkertompf) to orchestral (The Universe Will Provide, recorded with Holland’s Metropole Orkest), to acoustic folk (Wooden Smoke), to low-key singer-songwriter power-pop (Wing Beat Fantastic, a collaboration with XTC’s Andy Partridge) and pretty much everything in between.

The seed for this project was planted when Eric Johnson played on a few tracks for Mike Stern's 2009 album Big Neighborhood. The two guitarists discovered a shared affinity for jazz and blues, along with those two genres' rambunctious stepchildren, R&B and funk, and both players had always embraced a stylish fusion approach to their respective work.
