Narrator: Sean Runnette

On the evening of July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan took the stage at Newport Folk Festival, backed by an electric band, and roared into his new rock hit, "Like a Rolling Stone". The audience of committed folk purists and political activists who had hailed him as their acoustic prophet reacted with a mix of shock, booing, and scattered cheers. It was the shot heard round the world - Dylan's declaration of musical independence, the end of the folk revival, and the birth of rock as the voice of a generation - and one of the defining moments in 20th-century music.

In 1960 bassist Charles Mingus helped to organize an alternative Newport Jazz Festival in protest of Newport's conservative and increasingly commercial booking policy. The music on this LP (which has been reissued on CD) features some of the musicians who participated in Mingus's worthy if short-lived venture. Trumpeter Roy Eldridge performs three numbers with pianist Tommy Flanagan, Mingus and drummer Jo Jones; of greatest interest is "Mysterious Blues" for it adds trombonist Jimmy Knepper and the unique altoist Eric Dolphy successfully to the group. The other selections match up drummers Max Roach and Jo Jones with Roach's quintet (featuring trumpeter Booker Little) on "Cliff Walk" and feature singer Abbey Lincoln on "Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do."
Martial Solal - At Newport '63: Reissue, Remastered (1963/2016)

French jazz pianist Martial Solal's American recording debut took place at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival, with his set recorded and initially released by RCA Victor, though it was deemed too short for release, so a few numbers recorded during his afternoon rehearsal were added to lengthen the album, with applause duplicated from other numbers. Joined by Bill Evans' former rhythm section, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Paul Motian (who also made up his trio during an extended gig at New York City's Hickory House prior to Newport), Solal blends Art Tatum-like runs with an inherent lyrical side in a decidedly advanced bop setting. In addition to his enjoyable arrangements of standards and timeless jazz compositions, his extended work "Suite Pour Une Frise" also merits praise.

Most of this CD is taken up by a special Newport Jazz Festival concert featuring a big band full of Lionel Hampton's alumni. With trombonist Al Grey, Frank Foster on tenor and a screaming trumpet section that boasted Snooky Young, Jimmy Nottingham, Joe Newman and Wallace Davenport, the explosive nature of the music is not too surprising; the climax is provided by guest Illinois Jacquet on "Flying Home." The remainder of this disc contains half of a very effective 1956 session cut in Spain in which the medium-size group includes a castanet player and two songs match Hampton with the great Spanish pianist Tete Monteliu.
