En novembre 1947, l’archéologue israélien Eleazar Sukenik trouve chez un commerçant de Jérusalem un fragile rouleau de cuir de chevreau et réalise qu’il vient de faire une découverte sensationnelle. En effet, le document date du temps de Jésus. Par la suite, des fragments de près de neuf cents textes originaux rédigés en hébreu, en grec et en araméen sont découverts dans les grottes des environs de Qumran, sur la rive nord-ouest de la mer Morte.
