By 1993, alternative rock had arrived in a big way, and surprisingly, Canadian veterans Rush were game, releasing their most honest and organic rock & roll record in over a decade with Counterparts. Opener "Animate" is straightforward enough, but doesn't even hint at the guitar ferocity and lyrical angst of "Stick it Out," a song which undoubtedly polarizes Rush fans to this day…

Counterparts is the fifteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush. It became Rush's highest charting album in the US, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (only behind Pearl Jam's Vs.). The lyrics of Counterparts continue the trends of Roll the Bones with dark and emotional themes being the primary focus. Some songs are "heavy" sounding tracks like "Animate" and "Stick it Out", which topped the Mainstream Rock Tracks for four weeks in late 1993, becoming the band's fifth single to do so. "Leave That Thing Alone" earned a Grammy nomination for "Best Instrumental".

Another favorite of true Rush fans, this sixth studio album, released in 1978, once more explored fantasy and science fiction themes in Neil Peart’s lyrics. The final track, the ambitious nine-and-a-half minute La Villa Strangiato, was the band’s first instrumental. The album peaked at #47 on the Billboard charts, and was the group’s fourth consecutive gold album in the U.S., featuring the singles The Trees and Circumstances.
