More than 80,000 people are believed to have crossed the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy in 2017, and 2,000 are thought to have died in the attempt. Ships operated by charities are rescuing thousands but, as the numbers crossing grow, they face accusations that they are encouraging the migrant trade. Meanwhile, anti-immigrant groups are targeting Sicily, seeing an opportunity to build popular support. Yalda Hakim reports.
